The Strawberry Moon

Nothing connects me to my childhood quite like strawberry season. I loved strawberry everything – strawberry ice cream, strawberry milk, strawberry shortcake. I remember those frozen strawberry shortcake ice cream bars they sold at the convenience store at the top of my block, which combined all of my favorite things on a stick. But fresh strawberries were the best, and when Grandma took me strawberry picking, I would get caught putting more in my mouth than in my basket.

Friday, May 22nd, we welcome a new moon in Gemini, called the Strawberry Moon. It will be full on June 5th. This month is also known as the Rose Moon, the Hot Moon and the Mead Moon. The new moon in Gemini is a good time to commit to personal goals that express positive energy. It’s a time to explore relationships by taking on new roles, communicating openly, and being brave enough to be vulnerable with your partner. This leads to a sweeter outlook on life, like looking through rose colored glasses.

The strawberry is a symbol for Venus, the Goddess of Love because of it’s heart shape and red color. It’s a member of the rose family, and it is unique because the seeds grow on the outside rather than the inside. The ancient Romans used strawberries to alleviate melancholy, fainting, inflammation, fevers, sore throats, kidney stones, gout and diseases of the blood. Strawberries are rich in antioxidants, high in vitamin C and potassium.

Strawberry Quartz

For the strawberry moon, it was clear the that crystal of the month should be strawberry quartz. This crystal strengthens and balances the connection between the physical body and the aura with a gentle vibration. It brings blockages and hidden intentions to the surface to help you overcome problematic situations. It’s a great crystal for your meditation practice because it can stabilize unbalanced energy and bring guidance to your heart. Strawberry quartz is used for uncovering past lives, and for astral travel because it it expands consciousness and grants wisdom.

I am fruitful

I invite you to adopt this new moon affirmation, “I am made for more. I am fruitful. I am special.” Breathe it into your day. You can write it on a few sticky notes and place them where they will remind you. The new moon is the ideal time to start fresh and set an intention for this new phase.

If you have a regular yoga practice, you might start your session with a few minutes in staff pose (dandasana). Here’s a good video about how to do staff pose from my girl, Yoga with Adriene on youtube. This one is super simple, you can also use it for meditation.

Just sit on the floor with you legs straight out in front of you and your hands on the floor by your hips. Lift your chin up just slightly, and sit up straight so that your chest opens. Close your eyes and repeat the affirmation, “I am made for more. I am fruitful. I am special.” It’s so important to say it out loud so the universe can hear you!

The Flower Moon

May the Full Flower Moon shine blessings upon you. This moon is also known as the Milk Moon because it arrives at a time where spring babies are nursing from their mothers. This is the time for fertility, rebirth, creation and abundance.

I chose to call upon The High Priestess archetype this month. The High Priestess is the spiritual feminine, she is the inner knowing. The crescent moon lays at her feet; she asks those who follow her to trust in the lunar cycles. The columns of Boaz and Jachin represent the gateway to inner wisdom of the Temple of Solomon, the first Jewish temple in Jerusalem. They also represent ying and yang: assertive and receptive energies.

The High Priestess is linked to the mysterious universal truths; she is the mistress of unconscious knowledge. Pay attention to the wisdom of your dreams. You know what you are, and you know what you want. Be open to manifesting some good opportunities to get there. What if everything that is happening to you is the universe trying to give you what you asked for?

Carry a piece of citrine with you this full moon to harness the power of your free will and manifest what you want. Citrine is a stone of abundance, attracting prosperity, success and money. You can hold citrine in your hand while you mediate on this moon’s affirmation, “I am constantly in bloom. I am refreshed, rejuvenated, and reborn.” You can also write this affirmation on a slip of paper, read it every day and burn it on the next new moon to release your spell. This is also the perfect time to start a moon journal. In a moon journal, you make an entry for each phase of the moon. I suggest starting with the new moon and the full moon, that’s just two entries per month. You can make up to eight entries per month for all of the moon phases. If you’re looking for a yoga pose for your mediation and moon work, try flowering lotus pose. I have not mastered this pose quite yet, but I find it fun to try! If you’re a little too tight like me, work on some hip openers before adding this to your practice.

A Witch’s Guide to Social Distancing

I’ve been shying away from posting about the pandemic that is rippling across the globe. I wanted to stay positive, and felt the last thing we need is more reminders of the current state of affairs. But as the weeks pass, I’ve come to realize that my daily rituals and witchy beliefs have helped me so much and I wanted to share my experience with all of you.

“Good morning star shine, the Earth says hello”

Morning ritual makes me feel like a human even if I’m not leaving the house all day. I meditate and hit my yoga mat every morning, first thing. Sometimes I free style and find what feels good. I also highly recommend this Down Dog app, which a friend turned me on to. It is being offered for free right now! Also, Yoga with Adriene on youtube is my jam. Don’t take your home yoga practice too seriously, just have fun with it.

After yoga, I always shower, and put on real pants! Well, at least clean pants. I always make a point to brush my teeth right after I finish breakfast. I open all of the curtains to let as much light in as possible. I try to get outside a little bit every day. I have three dogs and I live in a neighborhood with plenty of sidewalks for lunch time strolls and after dinner walks. I know that we all have different routines and preferences. Personally, nothing works better for me than movement, nature and healthy habits.

Spells and smells

Filling your space with nice smells can be surprisingly uplifting. I have some frankincense oil in my diffuser this morning. Sometimes I’ll pick a citrus scent or a floral scent. Nothing like that at home? You can simmer a small pot of water with cinnamon, rosemary, lemons, anything you have on hand to make the house smell good. This is also a good offering for your mediation or spells. A simple spell I like to do is write an intention on a piece of paper and burn it in a candle.

Speaking of making the house smell good, I’ve been doing so much baking! Check out these biscuits and cinnamon rolls. I made a sauce from some strawberries stuck in the back of my freezer and put that on the biscuits for some strawberry shortcake. What are you cooking up at home? I like getting creative with the odds and ends in my cabinets.

Staying connected

My pets have been a great comfort to me. As much as I enjoy conversations with my dogs and my cat, I also try to stay in touch with humans. I also have been putting myself out there online. I took a yoga class through zoom with Healing Within RI.

Other lifesavers have been: books, poetry, movies, coloring and crafting!

I’ve had some zoom chats with my friends, and I try to call and text friends and family throughout the day. Its not always easy for me to point the camera at myself, but this has been a great opportunity to work on that. I’ve been giving tarot readings over the phone way more than usual. I’m working on creating more video content, like this fun “pick a number” reading!

The Pink Moon

The Pink Moon is full this Tuesday at 10:35pm! Full moons are a time for reflection and gratitude for all that you have experienced this moon cycle. This full moon is also called the pink moon, after a wildflower that blooms during this time of year. No, the moon won’t actually turn pink, it will look like the usual moon that we know and love. Although, it will be a supermoon, and the first full moon of Spring.

Work with the energy of the full moon by finding the lessons and positive moments that you’ve had since March 24th when the moon was new. You’re about to enter a stage of rebirth and renewal, shedding your winter coat. What is no longer serving you that you have the power to let go? Find beauty in nature, and you will find beauty within yourself.

Rose quartz crystals are good aides for your pink moon energy work. Rose quartz emits soft feminine energy, love, peace, and tenderness. It can be worn as jewelry, carried in your pocket (or in your bra). I like to hold a sizable piece of polished rose quartz in my palm while mediating. I often hold rose quartz when giving readings to pass on an intention of love and care to my clients.

The yoga pose that I recommend trying out this month is Reclined Goddess, Supta Baddha Konasana; check out that link for a how to video! You lay on your back, and you can use blankets or bolsters to make this a heart opening exercise. The feet come together and the knees go out to the side like a butterfly, opening the hips. This pose uses gravity to achieve a deep stretch. Try it at the end of your next yoga session for a cool down and be open to receiving the energy of the full Pink Moon.

The Tarot card I chose for the full Pink Moon is the Magician! The Magician is an alchemist. He can bring dreams and ideas into reality. He has all of the tools of the tarot suits at his disposal. He can do anything he sets his mind to, but he is a tricky fellow. He is resourceful, creative and artistic. In the spirit of the full Pink Moon, call upon The Magician for mastery of a skill, for resourcefulness in a tight situation, and for the opportunity to connect with nature.

The light on the meaning of inner wisdom

Sant Dnyaneshwar was a philosopher and an influential poet who is considered the greatest Saint of the Bhakti movement in Maharashtra, India. He wrote a commentary on the Bhagavad Gita in Marati, the vernacular language of the common people. At this time during the 13th century, religious scripts were written more formally in sanskrit. Dnyaneshwar’s teachings were lyrical poems that were easy to recite and sing. The lessons were easier to remember. This is why he is often described as, “the light on the meaning of inner wisdom.”

His work, Dnyaneshwari, gave simple lessons for everyday life and did not discriminate against wealth or caste. Some say his poems are more like lullabies. He was devoted to Lord Vitthal, a Hindu deity. He wrote with an emphasis on yoga, a belief in the oneness of Vishnu and Shiva, and non-dualistic Advaita Vedanta philosophy. 

At this time in history, yoga was more about mediation than the movements we know today. Dnyaneshwar gave us one of the first written accounts of proper yoga practice. A yogi has to be disciplined and  hold the mind in a place of solitude. You must practice having a controlled mind. He writes, “make the mind one-pointed.” Let go of expectations. Give the body a clean area and a firm seat. It’s also important to have good posture; a proper mudra.

Advaita Vedanta is a philosophy or a spiritual pathway more so than a religion, based on the idea that the self is the same as the highest metaphysical reality. You can strive for spiritual liberation through knowledge in this life.

At the young age of twenty one, having completed his life’s work, he took samadhi, eternal mediation. He closed himself off from the world and meditated for hundreds of years. It is said that 400 years later, a saint as visited by Dnyashwar in a dream, saying that something was bothering him. The saint broke into his tomb to find a tree root growing through his neck. According to the story, his body was not breathing but it was still warm to the touch.

There is so much more to the story of Dnyaneshwar, and I’m afraid this is an oversimplification. If you want to learn more about Dnyashwar, his work is available in English and here is a link to a biography.

On my tour of Maharashtra, we stopped at a Temple of Dnyaneshwar on our route from Shirdi to Arangabad. A peaceful and serene place. Removing my shoes on the dusty earth, I left them behind as I climbed the steps into the cool tiled temple floor in a large room with peach walls.

I received darshan, a view of the holy image of the deity in the temple, bowing with respect. I was blessed with ashes on the third eye, the eye of wisdom, my forehead. In front of me were two young girls dressed in gorgeous sarees, and making offerings. I was grateful for the opportunity to follow their lead.

 

Through the back of the temple was a great bronzed statue of Dnyashwar reciting his teachings, and his scribe writing down his words. 

Later in the trip, we visited another Dnyaneshwar site, Dnyaneshwar Maharaj Samadhi Mandir in Alandi, a  holy place near Pune.

 

I dipped my feet in the blessed waters of the Indrayani river. This beloved river is associated with Dnyaneshwar and Sant Tukaram who might be getting his own blog post in the future. 

I dipped my malas in the water for good luck. I noticed a woman behind me, preparing flesh flower offerings and I purchased one from her. Marigolds and herbs placed in a tin foil dish. A wad of cotton is burning in the middle.

I set an intention and pushed it into the water, but it didn’t move very far. Some young boys swimming in the river pushed it into the current for me, and I watched it drift away until I couldn’t make it out on the horizon any longer. The flame among the flowers was still burning like a light on my own inner wisdom.
