Eight of Swords

Helplessness · Apathy · Inhibitions

In the Eight of Swords, a woman is tied up, blindfolded, and trapped in a prison of swords. She’s exposed the raw elements, and the comforts of home are far off in the distance. Water is puddling around her feet, representing the wallowing in her own emotions. The sky is cloudy and gray, like her present state of mind.

But if we take a closer look, it is clear that there is no sword behind her, and her ties are not bound tight. She could easily escape by changing her perspective and pulling the blindfold off of this gloomy situation.

This card represents self imposed boundaries that keep us down when we have the power to free ourselves all along. When this card comes up in a reading, the person is usually feeling like a victim, and often for very valid reasons. Bad things happen that are out of our control. It takes a deep emotional response, filled with nasty introspection and vulnerability, to pull yourself out of victim mentality and take back your power. But you can do it! You are selling yourself short.

You are able to create your own opportunities and attract good fortune with your energy. Don’t be like the Eight of Swords and trap yourself in with unhealthy boundaries and an unfailing sense of impostor syndrome. Tell that nagging voice inside your head, the one that tells you can’t do it, or you’re not good enough, or not smart enough – to shut the heck up! I find it helpful to name your inner shame voice and address it directly. I call mine Frannie because “f*** off Frannie rolls right off the tongue.

Be careful making big decisions if you draw the Eight of Swords. It can mean that your way of thinking is limited because there is a perspective that you have not yet uncovered.

The number eight is a powerful symbol of infinity. It’s related to the constant flow of energy and power. It’s shadow side is overindulging in vices. If you draw this card in reverse, give your self a drama queen check and also watch those bad habits. Are you being a little extra lately? You know your vices! Don’t let them get the best of you.

The Eight Fold Path

Eight is a significant number in the Buddhist religion. Devotees of Buddha follow him in his practice of the Eight Fold Path. These are the dimensions of life that Buddha mastered in order to reach enlightenment.

I associate all of the Eights in the tarot deck with these teachings. The best way to shake that victim hood mentality is to get right in your own inner self and find your flow.

Have you every felt like everything was just clicking right into place? Things were coming together in your life in ways that could not just be coincidence? That is because you were in a state of flow. There are all different ways to raise your vibration, improve your happiness and your energy. Buddha is the master and there is much to be learned from his teachings.

January 10 – 16, 2019: XI Justice

A judge sits on her throne, cloaked in red and green. The blue square on her crown represents the stability of her thoughts. The double edged swords is held firm, and upright. This shows that she has come to a decision about the matter, and realizes that there will be consequences. She is ready to face them.

The scales in her left hand remind us that intuition has a place in a logical decision making process. The Justice card is ruled by the zodiac sign Libra. Libras search for the truth and seek harmony.

Ask Justice to guide you this week, as Jupiter moves to square Neptune on Sunday. This brings a test of your faith. Perhaps you’ve been too idealistic, and it ends in some embarrassing or disappointing situation for you. This is not a time to be overly optimistic about anything, and as a result, you might feel paranoid and suspicious of others. This is totally normal. If you’re think you’re crazy, talk to a friend that you trust very much.

Sometimes you need to know when to cut your losses, even if it means compromising your pride a little bit. Trust me, I write this because I’m terrible at it! You teach best what you need to learn the most. The Justice card can help you connect with your inner guidance system, ask for her help.

If you are honest with yourself, and you do what it is right, everything will be okay. If you have been dishonest and done something that goes against your highest self, you will be judged fairly. If you are seeking justice or a decision right now, this card is a sign that it will come soon. You will be called to account for your actions in some way this week. Own your decisions!

November 1 – 7, 2018: Ace of Swords

A clouded had reaches out, offering you a sword representing intelligence. The crown on top of the sword gives you the gift of mental clarity and powerful thoughts. The wreath adorning the crown represents victory and success. This card is your “a-ha!” moment. It also means that you might be entering a situation that is a double edged sword. Or, you might be starting a new adventure that is going to change the way you think.

This week Jupiter trines Chiron. Chiron is a comet, its energy helps you perceive new levels of intellect and Jupiter helps you feel the emotions associated with change. On Tuesday November 6th, temperamental Uranus retrograde enters independent Aries. During retrogrades, we experience slow downs or setbacks in the qualities of the planet. Uranus retrograde means you should probably put your an ego in a time out for awhile because you’ll be seeking some extra attention. Attempts to get special attention will backfire.

The new moon arrives on Wednesday, November 7th in transformational Scorpio. This is a good time to embrace your shadow side. Don’t worry, you will adjust the same way that your eyes adjust to the dark night. Work on shifting the blockages in your life. Be an alchemist. Create new things. Renew your soul before Winter sets in like the landscape of the Ace of Swords.

Use this time to clear out the old ways of thinking that are no longer serving you. Seek truth and justice. Open your mind. Don’t fear the shadows. Be careful not to get swallowed up by your own subconscious. Be smart, but don’t be cold.
