Shine On, Summer Solstice

The word “solstice” is from the Latin word Sol for ‘Sun’ and Sistere ‘to stand still’. June 21st is not only a new moon (learn more about the Buck Moon), but it’s also the summer solstice, the mid point of the year. It’s the longest day of the year; the latest sunset before the days start getting shorter again.

For us in the Northern Hemisphere, our land is bathed in light and warmth. It’s a time of joy and celebration. Yet, within this climax of the season, there’s a whisper that the darkness will return once again. So live it up! Enjoy it now.

Litha

In neo-pagan related traditions, this day is called Litha. God, as the Oak King, is bathed in abundance, as he surrenders his reign to his twin brother, the Holly King. So, before we welcome the return to the dark time of the year, we celebrate. Traditionally, people stayed up all night on Midsummer’s Eve to hail the sunrise. Bonfires were light on hill tops and at sacred places to honor the fullness of the sun all night. Trees near wells and fountains, where people would gather, were decorated with colored cloth.

Herbs, flowers and honey are flowing in abundance during this time of year. Any sort of tonics, new recipes or natural remedies you want to make will be potent. Summer Solstice is a time to fully open your heart. Experiment with nature by gardening, cooking, exploring. You can make a dandelion flower crown (directions here on Pinterest). I just invested in a new mortar and pestle and I am excited to break it in!

Litha blessings to you and yours. May your heart shine as bright as the sun.

Connection to the Midsummer Buck Moon

What a powerful time of year. You’ve fully defrosted from the Winter now, and perhaps your flaunting some sun kissed skin. Spring gave you abundance, fresh foods, and a time of new growth. You’ve grown in some ways, and you have a better sense of how this year is going to go.

It’s time to revisit your goals and update your intentions. Like a young buck stepping out into the field, your antlers have grown from stubs to almost full grown. But, they’re still fuzzy, soft and easily damaged. During this time of the year, bucks form bachelor groups for the summer, much like our quarantine social bubbles.

Bathe in the energy of the new moon on June 21st

The Buck Moon represents your abilities, and your comprehension of how those advantages can help you navigate the world. It’s a time of fine tuning sills and taking a chance with your talents. If you’ve never shared your art or your dream with anyone before, it’s time to put it out there! For this reason, I’m going to work with this affirmation for this moon cycle:

I face challenges with grace; my courage rises up with ease.

The crystal of the month, to put a little zing in my affirmation meditations, is… Amazonite! Amazonite is good during times of stress, it can help you chill out. It helps you hear the truth, even if it hurts. Its a powerful throat chakra stone, and can help you move beyond fear of confrontation or judgment so you can express yourself fully.

I’ve been trying to examine myself is some tough ways lately. I’m learning about anti-racism, which requires some serious introspection. I’m balancing that with a new gratitude practice to help me find more happiness on the daily.

My jam for this moon in my yoga practice is chair pose (Utkatasana)! This pose is so much harder than it looks, right? It lights a fire in the thighs and the shoulders, and it requires you to keep reaching up, no matter what. Striking this pose takes some courage, too because you need to stick your but out there and feel the shake.

I invite you to adopt these practices and make them your own. How will you rock this new moon? What is opening to you?

January 10 – 16, 2019: XI Justice

A judge sits on her throne, cloaked in red and green. The blue square on her crown represents the stability of her thoughts. The double edged swords is held firm, and upright. This shows that she has come to a decision about the matter, and realizes that there will be consequences. She is ready to face them.

The scales in her left hand remind us that intuition has a place in a logical decision making process. The Justice card is ruled by the zodiac sign Libra. Libras search for the truth and seek harmony.

Ask Justice to guide you this week, as Jupiter moves to square Neptune on Sunday. This brings a test of your faith. Perhaps you’ve been too idealistic, and it ends in some embarrassing or disappointing situation for you. This is not a time to be overly optimistic about anything, and as a result, you might feel paranoid and suspicious of others. This is totally normal. If you’re think you’re crazy, talk to a friend that you trust very much.

Sometimes you need to know when to cut your losses, even if it means compromising your pride a little bit. Trust me, I write this because I’m terrible at it! You teach best what you need to learn the most. The Justice card can help you connect with your inner guidance system, ask for her help.

If you are honest with yourself, and you do what it is right, everything will be okay. If you have been dishonest and done something that goes against your highest self, you will be judged fairly. If you are seeking justice or a decision right now, this card is a sign that it will come soon. You will be called to account for your actions in some way this week. Own your decisions!

September 13 – 19, 2018: The Devil

In this card, The Devil is depicted as a Satyr, a class of lustful, drunken woodland gods. In Roman culture, it is depicted as half man, half goat. You may have seen a similar creature in Disney‘s 1997 animated film, Hercules.

The human side of the devil represents sinful behavior. The goat side is symbolic of the scapegoats in our lives that we blame for our problems. The chains on the man and the woman are loose enough; they can lift them off to escape. Yet they stay voluntarily. The Devil is as much about recovery as it is about addictions.

This card is ruled by Capricorn, which is hosting the planet Saturn for three years (2017 – 2020). Saturn in Capricorn may have you yearning for more structure and stability in your life. You’ll be more focused on what responsibilities you voluntarily take on, especially in relationships.

On the 14th, Mercury in Virgo moves opposite of Neptune in Pisces. This energy will make you feel very practical in your thoughts and precise in your actions. Neptune in Pisces only happens once every 165 years, and the planet stays in the sign for 25 years. This reveals new information and incites a new surge of spirituality into the world.

August 16-22, 2018: The Sun

This card is a reminder to let your inner child shine through. A bouncing baby rides on a white horse, a symbol of innocence and purity. The scene is radiating action, life and vitality. This represents the happiness you feel when you are truly in tune with your highest self.

Think of the sun card as your inner flame when Jupiter trines Neptune and Mercury spins back into direct motion on August 19th. Jupiter is a ruler of light, sky and weather; Neptune is the ruler of the sea. You’ll have a hard time being productive at first, feeling so idealistic, that it’s difficult to start projects if things aren’t perfect. There is no need to rush.

During this week, watch out for opportunities that excite you; follow your arrow. What is for your highest good? Explore this question. The feeling of slowness and confusion will clear from your mind within a few days. When you break through the clouds, start to apply what you have learned. Be patient with yourself and those around you. Stay connected to your inner sun.
